Prof Fan Sheung Tat is currently the Director of the Liver Surgery Centre, Department of Surgery at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, and Emeritus Professor of the Department of Surgery, The University of Hong Kong. Professor Fan graduated from The University of Hong Kong in 1976. He started his academic career in 1987 as a Lecturer in the Department of Surgery, The University of Hong Kong, and was appointed Chair Professor of Surgery in 1993.
 
Prof Fan was Chief of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital from January 1988 to June 2008. In 1991, Prof Fan performed the first successful liver transplant in Hong Kong. In 1996, he pioneered the technique of adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation using a right liver graft. This innovative procedure helped ease the continuing problem of organ shortage in adult patients. The operation is now widely adopted and is regarded as a major breakthrough in the history of liver transplantation.
